A 75-year-old man has died
of meningitis C in the town of Tuscan town of Empoli, local
health authorities said Wednesday.
Piero Susini, who lived in the town of San Miniato near
Pisa, was hospitalized at Empoli's San Giuseppe Hospital on
Friday.
Tuscany has registered a surge in meningitis cases in 2016.
In total, there have been 13 recorded cases of the disease
and four deaths.
Regional officials have fielded a free meningitis vaccination
program for people aged 11-45 in a bid to stop the spread of the
contagious disease.
