The number of children of
pediatric age seeking emergency hospital treatment for
respiratory problems has increased by 25% in the last two months
due to high levels of air pollution particularly in big cities,
the president of the Italian Society of Pediatricians said
Tuesday.
"These are cases of hyper-reactivity of the mucous
membranes to air pollutants, which can also lead to respiratory
emergencies," Giovanni Corsello said.
"The number of cases is increasing, precisely in relation
to the smog emergency in many Italian cities," he added.
