A 65-year-old woman died of
meningitis C in the Pistoia area on Sunday night, sources said
Monday.
Also on Sunday, a 22-year-old man was hospitalized with
meningitis at Ponte a Niccheri hospital near Florence.
The woman had been hospitalized Saturday night, and is the
second meningitis fatality in Tuscany this year after a
58-year-old man died in hospital in the city of Pisa on January
21.
This brings to seven the total cases of meningitis in
Tuscany this year, against 38 cases and seven deaths in 2015.
On January 27, public health authorities extended a free
vaccination campaign for people aged 20-45 to the entire region.
That campaign was started last year and was extended to
June this year.
