Finance police on Monday
arrested the director of the post office of the northern
Sardinian village of Calangianus after discovering he embezzled
at least 25,000 euros from the savings account of an 80-year-old
woman who lives in London.
Maurizio Guerzi, 55, was caught red-handed as he withdrew
the maximum monthly amount of 2,500 euros from the victim's
account, using a second bank card he had requested on her behalf
but without her knowledge.
He had kept this up for almost a year, finance police said.
Guerzi had been accused of embezzling 120,000 from several
elderly victims in the past, but was reinstated at his job at
the post office nevertheless.
