An Italian family is seeking millions of euros in damages from local authorities in Puglia after discovering that their daughter, now 26, was switched with another baby at birth.
Just after a Caesarean birth at the Canosa hospital in June 1989, one set of parents, Michele and Caterina, were handed a daughter they called Lorena, who married and left home at 18, according to the Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno daily.
Meanwhile their biological daughter, Antonella, went to a family where she suffered abuse until she was adopted.
The exchange was discovered when Michele and Caterina's family saw a picture of Antonella on Facebook and noted how much she resembled Caterina.
Following a DNA test that proved that Antonella is in fact their real daughter, Michele and Caterina's family are seeking 9 million euros in damages from the Region of Puglia.
Their lawyer Salvatore Pasquadibisceglie told the Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno that the parents have tried to develop a relationship with their daughter but have not had the outcome they hoped for because Antonella is struggling to see them as her real parents.
Meanwhile Lorena is seeking 5 million euros in damages from local health services due to the trauma she has faced as a result of the discovery.
