The Italian foreign ministry's
crisis unit said on Tuesday that Ignazio Scaravilli, a doctor
from Catania who was kidnapped in Libya on January 6, has been
freed with the assistance of the Tripoli authorities and is in
good health.
Scaravilli is now in Tripoli, the base of an authority
that contests the legitimacy of the internationally recognised
government in Tobruk, where he is waiting to return to Italy.
The 77-year-old orthopedic surgeon and specialist in hand
operations left for Libya before Christmas with some Sicilian
colleagues to assist in the Dar Al-Wafa hospital in the Suq
Talat area.
His colleagues alerted the authorities that the doctor had
gone missing, although there were no eye witnesses to his
capture.
