Rome's traffic is the city's Achilles' heel, preventing it from being a truly modern city, social and economic research group CENSIS said in a report published on Tuesday in view of the start of the Jubilee of Mercy in December.
"Rome is the only European capital where public transport is not the backbone of urban mobility", CENSIS publication "Roma towards the Jubilee" stated.
The research group described the city transport as "deficient" and a "weak point", and said that the present urban mobility system penalizes residents and visitors.
Statistics reported that average rush hour travel time was 50 minutes for trips slightly over 10 kilometers, with the 58% of Romans feeling that the city's lack of efficient public transport system is holding it back from being a modern capital.
The report also stated that the use of bicycles was "negligible" while there was a "boom" in car sharing services and subscribers.
