Four people were killed and five wounded in a shooting spree in Naples Friday. Hospital nurse Giulio Murolo, 48, holed up in his flat and started shooting, first with a pistol and then with a pump-action rifle, eye witnesses said. Murolo's wife, brother, sister-in-law and a traffic cop were killed. Four police and a civilian were wounded. Murolo, a hunting enthusiast, was detained by police. According to some reports, the shooting may have been sparked by a row over a clothes line. One eye witness, the owner of a local restaurant, said it lasted around an hour and a half. The incident took place in the high-crime Secondigliano district.
Naples Mayor Luigi de Magistris said the southern city was in mourning until the victim's funerals.
He added that Premier Matteo Renzi had called to express his condolences. Renzi was scheduled to visit Naples on Saturday to inaugurate a new metro station and take part in an rally for his centre-left Democratic Party (PD), but these events have been cancelled.
