A 37-year-old nurse who was infected with Ebola while working with NGO Emergency was said to be in stable condition on Friday.
The nurse is being treated in Rome's Spallanzani hospital, which specializes in infectious disease and cared for an Italian doctor also infected last year while working for Emergency.
Health Minister Beatrice Lorenzin said Thursday that the patient poses no infection risk. "All protocols were followed," she said.
"He isolated himself as soon as symptoms appeared, and then he was hospitalized". The nurse, who hails from the Sardinian city of Sassari, contracted the virus during a three-month volunteer mission in Sierra Leone for the Italian medical non-profit organization.
Meanwhile, 10 people on the island of Sardinia are being monitored by health authorities for signs of Ebola virus, and three others are in quarantine, after having come into contact with the nurse who was infected with the virus, sources said Friday. The three in quarantine are the nurse's mother and two sisters, while the ten being monitored are volunteer nurses and doctors who came into contact with the patient.
