A National Animal Protection Agency (ENPA) petition calling for an end to what it calls "the ritual massacre of lambs" at Easter has gathered more than 19,000 signatures, the petition's website showed Monday.
The animal rights organization condemned what it says is the yearly massacre of millions of lambs and kids, who are torn from their mothers days after birth only to suffer a terrifying death after long and exhausting journeys.
"The lambs are tied together by their feet, hung upside down, stunned with electric shocks, and their throats are slashed," the petition said.
Some 2.2 million lambs and kids were slaughtered in this way at Easter in 2014 alone, according to ENPA. The petition can be signed at http://goo.gl/UDuLSq Another 19,000 people have signed a similar petition being circulated by Animal Equality Italy and the Antivivisection League (LAV).
This one features photos of actors and other celebrities holding a lamb with a slogan that says "Make a sacrifice this Easter. Don't kill me". It can be viewed at http://salvaunagnello.com/
