Police say a 58-year-old Puglia man, newly released from prison where he served time for attempting to kill his ex-wife, aimed to try again with a knife but instead brutally disfigured the face of another woman.
The man, accused of attempted murder, had been released from prison in early March and two weeks later, on March 16, went again to try to kill his ex-wife, police say.
But he apparently mistook a woman in a parked car for his ex-spouse, jumped in, and began to slash at her face and neck with the knife, very narrowly missing her jugular vein.
When he realized his mistake, he fled but was soon found.
The 71-year-old victim was hospitalized in Bari where authorities say she will have to remain for at least 40 days for reconstructive surgery.
