Heavy rain and high winds on
Wednesday caused travel problems and safety concerns across
Italy, including the shutdown of some ferry services and the
temporary closure of an international road tunnel between Italy
and France.
Force 8 winds blowing across the Gulf of Naples forced the
complete suspension of ferry and hydrofoil service between the
islands and the mainland.
Further west on the island of Sardinia, three families were
evacuated from their homes in Villa San Pietro due to flooding.
In the same area, 15 vehicles fell into a hole that opened
up on the SS125 motorway due to the heavy rains, but no injuries
were reported.
In Solenas on the island's southwest coast, a 78-year-old
farmer was rescued after his car was swept away by flood waters
as he was crossing a ford.
Meanwhile up north, the Col di Tende road tunnel between
Italy and France was temporarily closed, due to heavy snow on
the France side, where a truck slid off the road.
