The president of the Sicilian
chapter of Italy's business union Confindustria, Antonello
Montante, is under investigation in connection with a Mafia
probe carried out by State attorneys in Caltanissetta, Rome
daily La Repubblica reported on Monday.
According to the newspaper, which did not provide any
further details on the investigation nor the charges allegedly
involving the business union's president, Montante is being
probed in connection with statements made by three Mafia
"pentiti".
The so-called pentiti, or penitent ones, are members of the
Mafia who testify for the State against the criminal
organization.
Montante, who is Confindustria's representative for
legality, is also under investigation in Catania, according to
La Repubblica.
A native of Serradifalco, a town near Caltanissetta,
Montante, 52, has a bicycle factory, which was originally
founded in the 1920s.
Together with his predecessor at the helm of Sicily's
Confindustria, Ivan Lo Bello, the entrepreneur was one of the
promoters of a new ethical code launched by the union.
He is also the president of Caltanissetta's chamber of
commerce and was appointed last month a member of the national
institution managing assets confiscated from the Mafia, at the
government's proposal.
