The reproduction of
Michelangelo's famed David statue at the entrance to Palazzo
Vecchio in Florence donned a black arm band on Thursday as a
sign of mourning for the 12 people killed in Wednesday's attack
by a suspected Islamist commando on the Paris offices of the
weekly satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.
"This attack on the heart of France is an attack on the
whole of Europe and on freedom," Florence mayor Dario Nardella
said.
"Right now we all feel French and in particular we all feel
involved as Italians and Europeans in the defence of democratic
values," continued Nardella, inviting Florentines to take part
in a candlelit vigil outside the French consulate in Piazza
Ognissanti at 7pm on Friday.
