Carabinieri police on Thursday arrested five people on suspicion of carrying out armed assaults on heavy goods vehicles in the southern Puglia region and stealing the contents.
The alleged gang members face charges of aggravated robbery, kidnapping, illegal gun possession and possession of stolen goods. Police also recovered Nike trainers worth 300,000 euros and two tonnes of coffee worth 30,000 euros from the warehouse. Investigators say the booty was destined for sale in supermarkets in the suburbs around Bari.
