Paramilitary Carabinieri police
on Friday stopped six youths believed responsible for dozens of
robberies on the Rome subway system.
Police arrested four young men and a woman, aged 17 to 19.
A sixth young woman was accused of a crime but not placed in
custody.
Investigators believe the youths formed a gang responsible
for at least 23 robberies that took place on the Rome
metropolitan B line.
The gang members hunted victims, threatening them at times
with a knife, and forced them to hand over cell phones -
especially iPhones - money and other valuables, investigators
said.
Those who resisted were attacked with kicks, bites and
punches, investigators added.
The girls allegedly served as lookouts, and searched the
pockets of the victims being held at bay.
