One out of every five
children or adolescents in Italy is affected by a psychiatric
disorder, with patients increasing 5% each year, said Antonella
Costantino, newly elected president of the Italian Society for
Child and Adolescent Neuropsychiatry.
Public health assistance in the field is experiencing a
"dramatic fall" with "less than one in four children able to get
necessary treatment", Costantino said.
Costantino said 600,000 children and adolescents are
currently being treated for neuropsychiatric disorders out of an
estimated 3.6 million needing treatment.
