Authorities issued a weather
advisory as a cold front bringing rain, hail, and gale-force
winds swept across Italy's northern regions Wednesday.
In Piedmont, flooding was reported in the provinces of
Biella, Vercelli, Novara, Verbania, and the shores of Lago
Maggiore.
In Lombardy, volunteer rescuers evacuated hikers trapped by
swollen streams and submerged bridges.
In the coastal Liguria region, authorities warned of
thunderstorms and high seas.
The weather is expected to improve later on Wednesday, with
temperatures at a low 14 degrees through Thursday.
Italy has been battered by an unusually stormy summer, with
torrential rains wreaking damage in many regions, costing
farmers millions of euros and contributing to a slump in seaside
tourism this season.
