The Italian Navy's San
Giusto ship landed in the southern city of Reggio Calabria on
Monday with 1,700 rescued migrants of various nationalities
aboard, including hundreds of children.
Italy is struggling to cope this year with a huge increase
in the already big flow of migrants to attempt the hazardous
crossing from North Africa.
The migrants were rescued as part of the Mare Nostrum
operation that Italy launched after some 400 migrants died in
two separate boat disasters in October.
Police have detained a man who they said felt ill after
arriving in Reggio Calabria and is suspected of being a human
trafficker.
The Italian authorities said that a total of 2,053 migrants
were rescued as the weekend under Mare Nostrum.
