Naples police on Friday busted
an international drug-trafficking ring that allegedly brought
some 1,500 kg of cocaine to Italy from Spain and the
Netherlands.
Police arrested 15 people on suspicion of supplying dealers
in Naples and nearby Torre Annunziata, seizing 110 kg of cocaine
in the process.
The traffickers allegedly brought the illegal merchandise
in on long-distance lorries, hidden under fruit and flowers.
Among those nabbed are Vincenzo Scarpa, alias The Doctor,
who has already done time for drug trafficking, the owner of a
long-distance trucking firm, and Francesco Tamarisco, who heads
a clan by the same name operating in the Torre Annunziata area.
The latter is a career criminal well-known to law
enforcement.
In 1997, he was arrested along with 16 others, including a
janitor and a teacher, for luring children aged 6-9 years old
from a Torre Annunziata school, drugging them, and filming them
while being sexually assaulted in a garage and several
apartments near the school.
The tapes were then sold to pedophiles, Corriere della Sera
newspaper reported.
