Foreign Minister and Deputy Premier
Antonio Tajani said Thursday that Stellantis's "conscience"
should stop it from abandoning production in Italy.
On Wednesday Stellantis Enlarged Europe Deputy Chief Operating
Officer Davide Mele said that delays in the arrival of State
incentives for the auto sector were "having a significant impact
on Stellantis's Italian plants".
But Tajani said the group, formed from the merger of
Fiat-Chrysler and Peugeot, has a moral obligation to continue in
one of its three homelands.
"I hope that Stellantis does not leave Italy," Tajani said on
the sidelines of the meeting of NATO foreign ministers in
Brussels.
"We have a car-industry tradition that cannot be abandoned and I
think it is right that this company continues to invest in our
country, in part because there are also constraints of
conscience.
"We are in a free-market system and no one can force anyone to
do anything.
"I made a call to a sense of responsibility".
Tajani also spoke about the possibility of Italy getting other
auto multinationals to produce here.
"We are an attractive country and we'll see who to open
negotiations with at the right time," he said.
