hailed today's Senate approval of a government bill to fight
gangmasters and the exploitation of immigrant day laborers in
near-slavery conditions in Italy's farms and vineyards.
"The Senate has taken a great step forward to render
justice to the many farmworkers, both women and men, who submit
to exploitation, blackmail, wages of three euros an hour,
working up to 13 hours a day, precarious lodgings and no
services," said a CGIL union member.
UIL's Stefano Mantegazza said today was a victory for
"workers, unions, and the victims of black labor. The second,
decisive round in the Lower House is still ahead".
Luigi Sbarra from CISL thanked Lower House Speaker Laura
Boldrini for her words on "the shameful scourge of gangmasters"
and called for the Lower House to give the bill its OK in
"speedy way without surprises".
