Premier Matteo Renzi said in New
York Thursday that "we think that by the end of the month we can
pass a further measure, I hope it's the last, to try to get
credit moving, to give greater solidity to the banking system
and greater credit to businesses". He said "we have looked with
favour on the work of the private sector to set up a
wide-ranging solution to solve the credit question, we would
have preferred a solution when the EU allowed wider margins".
Renzi was referring to the private Atlante fund to shore up
weaker banks and take on their non-performing loans. The
government has passed several measures to support the Italian
banking system.
