An oil leak in Valpolcevera near
Genoa on Sunday evening occurred after an underground oil
pipeline connected to the Busalla refinery broke, according to a
statement by Iplom, which runs the refinery.
It added that the incident had occurred during the transfer
of crude oil from a ship in Multedo's Petroli port and that
emergency measures were immediately enacted.
The Iplom facilities in Busalla have been seized and an
investigation has been opened. The inquiry will be conducted by
the regional environmental protection agency, ARPAL.
The cause of the incident and the environmental damage
resulting will be assessed.
