Intesa Sanpaolo CEO Carlo Messina
said Wednesday that he had a positive view of media businessman
Urbano Cairo's plans for RCS, the publisher of top Italian
dailies Corriere della Sera and La Gazzetta dello Sport. On
Friday Cairo announced he was making a bid to take a controlling
stake in RCS, via an offer to exchange shares in his Cairo
Communications company, and make it part of a multi-faceted
media group. "Cairo has proposed a solution that has industrial
value and it can work," said Messina, whose bank has a stake of
around 5% in RCS. "Cairo made an excellent impression on me. He
has clear ideas". Cairo is the owner of the La7 TV station and
Torino soccer club.
