Enel electricity giant is in
negotiation with Italian telephone operators over a plan to
offer domestic telephone subscribers fibre-optic cables in their
homes when they replace their old electricity counters, Enel
managing director Francesco Starace said Thursday.
"We are talking to all the telephone operators and they
are rather interested, because it is a good idea," Starace told
a shareholders' meeting.
"Anyone interested can carry out the cabling of Italy in a
short period, one would need three to four or five years, these
are extraordinary speeds".
Cabling can be done "at the same time as changing the
counter," meaning that one can "carry out the cabling with
extremely competitive levels of savings that are convenient for
everyone - this is an opportunity we are offering the telephone
companies".
Enel has for some time worked with telephone operators
including Telecom to introduce optical fibre cables but now "we
have extended this project to the home".
