Italian carmaker Fiat's finance arm Fiat Finance and Trade and computer giant Apple may face fines over favourable tax regimes they enjoy in Luxembourg and Ireland respectively, the European Commission said Tuesday.
The EC published a report saying such regimes may break EU competition rules and amount to illegal State aid.
The commission asked the two companies for further information that might clear up doubts voiced in the report.
Fiat was registered in the Luxembourg with a UK tax base as part of its recent merger with Chrysler into Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA).
Fiat Finance and Trade has been based in Luxembourg since its incorporation in 1997.
