Premier Giuseppe Conte on Tuesday expressed satisfaction as the the first section of the new viaduct that will cross the city of Genoa was raised. The new viaduct, designed for free by starchitect Renzo Piano, a Genoa native, will replace the Morandi Bridge, which collapsed in August 2018 in a disaster that claimed 43 lives. The bridge, shaped like a sail to reflect Genoa's seafaring heritage, is expected to be ready next year.
The 500-tonne steel structure being lifted on Tuesday, almost 50 metres high and 50 metres long, is the first of 19 that will make up the new bridge. "Genoa is a symbol of a rebirth that is taking place. We can touch it with our hands," Conte said as he witnessed the launch of the operation along with Mayor Marco Bucci, Liguria Governor Giovanni Toti and other officials. "The public and private sectors are cooperating in an intelligent way with team spirit.
"Together great things can be done".
