President Sergio Mattarella has
honoured 33 Italian for acts of heroism in 2018 including a
Romanian-Italian woman who denounced Roma's Casamonica mafia
clan and a Moroccan-Italian street hawker who defended a woman
doctor from an attack outside her walk-in clinic in Crotone.
Roxana Roman, 34, stood up to violence from the Casamonicas
and sent two of them to jail.
Mustapha El Aoudi, 40, in Italy since he was two, saved
56-year-old Maria Carmela Calindro when she was attacked and
stabbed in the neck with a screwdriver by a masked man while
leaving a Crotone hospital.
Among the other recipients of the Knights of Merit awards was
Irma Dall'Armellina, who took part in a humanitarian mission to
Kenya at the age of 93.
