The Senate Speaker's office on
Wednesday approved a deliberation to cut 'vitalizi'
parliamentary pensions proposed by Lower House Speaker Roberto
Fico of the ruling 5-Star Movement (M5S).
The proposal was only voted by the majority while opposition
members did not participate in the vote.
Senators will be allowed to present amendments until October
15 while debate will start the following day.
Vitalizi have more favorable conditions than ordinary State
pensions.
They have been abolished for new lawmakers, who now get
pensions on the basis of the contributions paid into the pension
system, but former parliamentarians still get them.
