The oldest Italian wine has been
found after residue from nearly 6,000 years ago was found in a
Copper Age jar in a cave near Agrigento, a Florida
University-led team said Friday.
The team, including the National Research Council and the
University of Catania, published their findings in the
Microchemical Journal.
They said the find on Mt Kronio showed winemaking did not
start in the Bronze Age, as previously believed, but about 2,000
years before that.
The terracotta jar bore traces of tartaric acid and sodium
salts, substances found in grapes and winemaking.
The team said it would continue its work to try to see if the
wine was red or white.
