Premier Matteo Renzi on
Thursday berated the "selfishness" of Eastern European countries
that build barriers against refugees, 27 years after the fall of
the Berlin wall.
"They raise new walls, focusing on their sometimes
egotistical point of view with respect to the building of a
community based on solidarity," the center-left premier told
mayors and businesspeople in the Abruzzo city of Pescara.
"Europe cannot be founded on austerity algorithms designed
by community bureaucrats," Renzi said.
"Europe must not be a jumble of egotistical entities, but a
framework of united and ethical countries," he said.
This principle will be upheld at celebrations for the 60th
anniversary of the EU to be held in Rome in March, he added.
Renzi was in the Abruzzo city to inaugurate an anti-seismic
school, among other stops.
