Gianfranco Rosi's Fuocoammare is Italy's contender for the best foreign language film at the 2017 Oscars. The movie was selected on Monday from a field of seven by a committee at the offices of film industry association ANICA.
'Fuocoammare' (Fire At Sea) is a documentary about Italian migrant stepping-stone island Lampedusa. It looks at the lives of island residents as well as migrants who land on the island, which is closer to Africa than to mainland Italy.
It won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year.
The others films in the running to be Italy's Oscar contender were: 'Gli Ultimi Saranno gli Ultimi' by Massimiliano Bruno; 'Indivisibili' by Edoardo De Angelis; 'Lo Chiamavano Jeeg Robot' by Gabriele Mainetti; 'Perfetti Sconosciuti' by Paolo Genovese; 'Pericle il Nero' by Stefano Mordini; and 'Suburra' by Stefano Sollima. The Oscar awards ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on Sunday February 26.
