The head of Italy's Supreme Council of Magistrates (CSM), the judiciary's self-governing body, said Tuesday lawmakers and the judiciary must move from a "phase of mutual delegitimization to one of reciprocal legitimization". "Lowering the temperature of the conflict is not enough," Giovanni Legnini said. "We must go beyond - the time has come to make a change".
Legnini added the era of trial by media must be brought to an end. The role of the media is "crucial", he said. "We must overcome the season of trials by media, we need to guarantee more and better information on the judiciary, its proceedings and the content of its rulings, and on the activity and functioning of government".
