Former Cosa Nostra boss of bosses Bernardo Provenzano has died aged 83, sources said Wednesday. He was arrested after 43 years on the run on April 11, 2006, in a farmhouse where he was hiding out not far from his relatives. The ex-mafia chief, once nicknamed the 'Bulldozer' because of the way he "mowed down" rivals, was serving life for several murders including ordering fatal bomb attacks on anti-mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino in 1992.
He was subjected to the 41-bis treatment for Italy's most dangerous criminals.
Provenzano had been suffering from Parkinson's and related disorders.
