Renato Soru, the founder and president of Tiscali, was indicted on Tuesday in relation to a probe in Cagliari into alleged false business communications regarding a branch of the Italian telecommunications group. The trial of the MEP, a member of Premier Matteo Renzi's Democratic Party (PD) and Sardinia governor from 2004 and 2008, will start on October 25.
In May Soru was sentenced to a three-year jail term by a Cagliari judge over a separate tax-evasion case.
That conviction relates to tax evasion of 2.6 million euros linked to a loan by Soru's Andalas Ldt to Tiscali.
The sentence created a new judicial headache for the PD which has seen several local members implicated in graft probes recently.
"I didn't expect this sentence," Soru said.
"I think this sentence is unjust".
