Pope Francis in his weekly general audience on Wednesday emphasized the symbolic importance of wine in a teaching based on the miracle of the wedding feast at Cana, when Jesus turned water into wine.
"You can't finish a wedding celebration drinking tea, it would be an embarrassment, wine is needed for the celebration," Pope Francis said.
The pope said Mary's last words in the Bible, to 'do as Jesus says', came just after her observation to Jesus that there was no wine at the wedding feast.
He used that observation as a jumping-off point for his talk on the wine miracle as a symbol of the "love that the Church holds and wants to give to everyone".
