The Senate justice committee on Wednesday adopted a new unified text on reforms to criminal trials and to the statute of limitations after the parties in opposition to Premier Matteo Renzi walked out. The reform is enshrined in two bills, one aimed at speeding up trials and the other aimed at reforming the statute of limitations so that trials are not so often timed out.
The various opposition parties marched out after PD rapporteurs presented a unified text on two bills on penal reform and reform of the statute of limitations. The opposition Senators said it was "unacceptable" that they had not been given enough time to read the bills.
Renzi said earlier that the issue of probity applied to all areas of Italy's political spectrum. "I get angry because my government has increased punishments for corruption and extended the statute of limitations for corruption, while others voted No," Renzi told RTL radio. "The moral question is everywhere, (everywhere) there are people who steal. It's not right, but we must stop shooting others down. It's not left against right, but honest people against thieves".
