Pope Francis's Twitter account
in Latin reached the 500,000-follower mark shortly after
midnight, Vatican news site Il Sismografo said Tuesday.
Former pope Benedict launched the account, @Pontifex, on
December 12 in eight languages (Italian, French, Spanish,
Portuguese, Polish, German, English and Arabic).
The response was such that the account managers decided to
open a ninth account, in Latin - still the official language for
Vatican documents - on January 17, 2013, a couple of months
before Francis became pope.
