(ANSA) - The 18th edition of Cibus, the international food show, opens on May 9 in the city of Parma. Cibus has been held since 1985 on a biennial basis in Parma, which is famous for Parmigiano, Prosciutto di Parma and Culatello, and it is the oldest and best-known Italian food fair in the world.
This year 3,000 firms, all Italian, will present the best of Italian production and will bring to Cibus 900 new products to be proposed on foreign markets. Some 70,000 commercial operators are expected to attend, including 15,000 from abroad and 2,000 top buyers from every continent. All sectors are represented: meat and salumi, cheese and dairy, gastronomy, ultrafresh, frozen, pasta, preserves and condiments, sweet and baked products, fresh fruit and vegetables, beverages, typical and regional products, and much more. Among the novelties there is a section devoted to fresh and very fresh products, one devoted to fish and one to halal and kosher products. This latter section will present tasty 'made in Italy' products certified for export.
Cibus 2016 will open on May 9 and will remain open until May 12 with an International conference, the World Food Research and Innovation Forum, organized by the Emilia-Romagna region under the aegis of the European Union, in collaboration with Cibus and Federalimentare, the food-industry association. The conference, which will be attended by agricultural ministers and experts from all over the world, will be opened by Agriculture Minister Maurizio Martina: the work will focus on challenges for feeding the planet, the legacy of the Milan Expo 2015 world's fair and the Milan Charter, the 2030 agenda for sustainable development and the commitments made by the international community to overcome the challenges posed by climate change.
Cibus gives great space to foreign retail: from the stand of the top Italian distribution chain, the Coop, with an area completely dedicated to foreign buyers, to the daily space of GDO Week where there will be daily workshops with foreign retailers to discover their approach to Italian products and produce. Last December Parma became one of UNESCO's Creative Cities for Gastronomy, a line-up that includes 17 cities ranging from the US to China, from Brazil to South Korea, from Norway to Spain. A UNESCO delegation will visit Cibus and will be in Parma for four days for meetings and conferences .
