Italian retail sales were flat in January with respect to December and down 0.8% with respect to the same month in 2015, Istat said on Thursday. It was the biggest year-on-year drop since November 2014.
The national statistics agency said sales for small shops were down 2% but up 0.6% for major retailers. "In January 2016 the seasonally adjusted retail trade index remained unchanged compared with December 2015 (0.0% for food goods and 0.1% for non-food goods)," Istat said.
"The average of the last three months compared to the previous three months decreased by 0.1%. The unadjusted index decreased by 0.8% with respect to January 2015".
