More than one infant in four
were born in 2014 to parents who are not married to each other,
rising to one in three in the centre-north of Italy, national
statistics institute Istat said Friday.
In all, 138,680 babies were born to unmarried parents in
2014, some 5,000 more than in 2013.
Births to married parents fell by some 57,000 between 2008
and 2014, Istat said, while births to unmarried parents became
27.6% of the total in Italy in 2014 compared with 23.6% in 2010.
