(supersedes previous)There is
no cause for concern over Italy's gas stocks, Industry Minister
Federica Guidi said Wednesday after Russian energy giant Gazprom
announced it will stop supplying Ukraine.
There are no variations in the flow of Russian gas to Italy
to date and "imports from other points remain unchanged", she
said.
Italian gas stocks were topped up during the summer and
they only started coming on tap "a short while ago", Guidi said.
"Today we are 90% full," she said.
Guidi also said supplies were highly diversified and did
not depend heavily on gas from Russia. Sources include domestic
gas, pipelines from Algeria, northern Europe, and Libya, and
three regasification terminals that are currently working below
capacity.
Regasification is a process of converting liquefied natural
gas back to natural gas at atmospheric temperature.
Guidi said those terminals are set to produce an additional
30 million cubic meters of gas in case demand peaks this winter.
