Twelve councillors in Messina
will have to present themselves to police before and after
council hearings after an investigation revealed that some local
politicians were taking payment for meetings they had not
attended.
The investigation was launched in November 2014 and used
methods including wiretaps to uncover illegal conduct by a group
of councillors in the Sicilian port city.
Suspects are accused of abuse of office, fraud and
fraudulent misrepresentation for allegedly receiving attendance
fees when they did not show up to council meetings.
Police are due to provide further details in a news
conference on Thursday.
