Former Democratic Party (PD)
Senator Corradino Mineo on Thursday apologized for saying
Premier Matteo Renzi is in the thrall of "a beautiful,
determined woman".
"I didn't mean to sound sexist," said Mineo, a leftist
former journalist at RAI public broadcaster who quit Renzi's
center-left Democratic Party (PD) last week.
"I apologize if someone perceived sexist allusions, but it
was not my intention to make any sexual reference".
"Renzi is subjugated by (Reform Minister Maria Elena)
Boschi," he went on.
"I know he didn't believe in the Constitutional reform or
the school reform. But his people forced him. He's a fragile
leader," said Mineo, who has long been at odds with Renzi, who
is the PD leader as well as premier.
In a letter published yesterday, Mineo said "I know the
extent to which (Renzi) feels inferior to and dependent on a
beautiful, determined woman - to the point where he questions
his very role in government".
"I know, but I won't reveal the details of private
conversations".
