The education ministry said on Thursday it would be providing schools with funding so that as many students as possible can attend the Expo world's fair in Milan. The ministry said it would allocate some 3.4 million euros to regions, based on number of students and their distance from Milan.
"Expo 2015 needs to be an opportunity for young people to gain knowledge," Davide Faraone, undersecretary at the Education Ministry, wrote on Facebook.
"Made in Italy is a food heritage that makes Italy the envy of the world. Through Expo, young people can become aware of their identity, to appreciate it and protect it, on one hand, and relaunch the future on the other," he added.
Regional school authorities have until August 4 to tell the ministry which schools will attend the Expo. Any remaining funds after the first selection will go towards another round of applications that schools will have to submit by August 28, Faraone said.
