Loredana Parrella, artistic director of Cie Twain Physical Dance Theatre, has created a rendition of the French opera Carmen in which six men dance to original music played live by Pino Basile.
The production had its debut Sunday at this year's Montepulciano International Art Workshop.
"Carmen, Les Hommes," was staged in the main square of Montepulciano, in the courtyard of the city's Duomo, the Santa Maria Assunta cathedral.
The six dancers were dressed simply, in pants and shirts, and at times alternated between states of undress as they touched on themes of universal femininity. One such nod to the absent figure of the female occurs when four of them try on women's transparent stockings, after which the other two measure themselves between regression and outbursts of virility.
The music, a mixture of electronica and tribal, is rhythmic and interspersed with arias from Georges Bizet's Carmen.
The meeting between the men and the seductive cigarette girl shows two irreconcilable worlds.
"Any attempt to reduce the wild and nomadic force within the rules of a dominant and stable culture is destined for the worst of failures. It's destined for death," Parrella said.
