A new committee on human
trafficking began work in parliament on Thursday as part of the
bicameral anti-mafia commission, presented by committee
coordinator MP Fabiana Dadone of the anti-establishment 5-Star
Movement (M5S).
Dadone cited figures from the International Organization
for Migration showing that 800,000 people, 90% of whom are women
and children, are estimated to be victims of human trafficking
each year.
In Italy, the number of human trafficking victims rose from
1,624 to 2,381 between 2008 and 2010, a 47% increase, Dadone
said.
The human trafficking committee, whose work is estimated to
take about six months, will look for solutions for
"understanding and combating human trafficking more
efficiently," Dadone said.
