The EU's newly adopted plan to
resettle up to 20,000 asylum seekers in Europe is not enough,
Save the Children NGO said Wednesday.
"Given the high number of asylum seekers and refugees who
have put their lives in the hands of traffickers, the
number...is just the minimum threshold that Europe can and must
receive," Save the Children Italy Director Valerio Neri said.
"EU States' responsibility begins before the migrants reach
European borders," he added.
"Europe must also be in the middle of the Mediterranean,
where thousands of children we have met watched their parents,
relatives and friends die".
Neri added that children and vulnerable people must be
given "absolute priority" in the EU's resettlement plan.
Today's approval of the Migration Agenda is "just the first
step" in a long and difficult process, the NGO said.
