Solidarity is the "essential
mainspring of civil and peaceful co-existence," President Sergio
Mattarella said Thursday.
The comment came in a message to participants in a
conference on Chiara Lubich (22 January 1920 - 14 March 2008), a
Italian Catholic activist and founder of the international
Focolare Movement.
This event "will contribute towards defining new paradigms
of collective action based on a concrete example of Christian
charity and understanding of the other," continued Mattarella,
himself a practicing Catholic.
